Phillip Morris Companies Inc., now known as Altria Group Inc., is probably the biggest cigarette manufacturing company around the globe. It has manufactured some leading cigarette brands like Red & White, Parliament and Virginia Slims etc.

The name L&M comes from Liggett & Meyers, which is its production company. The name of the company, Liggett & Meyers was changed to Liggett Tobacco and this company has the honor to be the fourth biggest tobacco producing company in U.S. the head office of the company is situated in Durham, North Carolina and Pyramid, Quest, Grand Prix, Eve and Liggett Select are the cigarette brands currently manufactured by the company.

The brand has become popular in U.S since 2007. Before that the brand was not very known in U.S. but was a leading cigarette brand in countries like Egypt, Syria, Israel, and Puerto Rico and also in European countries. There was a ban which started in Europe, disallowing cigarette brands to use the word “Lights” with them hence the name L&M Lights was changed to L&M Blue Label.

The business of this cigarette manufacturing was started on a small level in New Jersey by Christopher Foulks who was the grandfather of Liggett.  Later, the business was moved to Illinois and then to Missouri where the business continues as a family enterprise to the date. The company was named J. E. Liggett and Brother and the first cigarette manufactured by the company was a blend of Virginia and Turkish tobaccos. Later on, the company entered into a joint venture with George Smith Meyers and hence the name of the company changed to Liggett & Meyers.

After some years, this incorporation manufactured chewing tobacco and started manufacturing cigarettes after its success. The company introduced many brands of cigarettes and Chesterfield is worth mentioning among them which was reintroduced as a Turkish and Virginia blend. Lark, Eve and Eve 120s followed in the wake.

Over all the years of its business, the company went through a lot of name changing phases. When the new cigarette brand, Pyramid, came out, it was regarded as the cigarette brand of the decade.
